Cyber begging is the online equivalent of someone asking for help, financial or otherwise from complete strangers in order to meet one’s needs when in financial distress or is incapable of raising funds for those needs. Cyber begging can be done to fund a charitable cause or directly ask for money to fund an individual distress like medical bills or child support.

Cyber begging can be done through the following methods:

• Web page – Like beggars or solicitors on a street corner, persons or groups engaged in cyber begging have their own web page in a little corner in the internet. They can either be made from scratch hosted on their own server or made from a template hosted in various hosting sites. These cyber begging pages state their cause or their dilemma in a convincing solicitous tone to convince altruistic individuals to contribute.

• Popup – though rarely done, cyber begging can also be done using popup windows. These screens appear randomly while people browse through the internet. Solicitors also use banner ads or short Google ads advocating their cause.

• Forum post – Persons engaged in cyber begging can also be found in online forums. They register for membership on free forums and engage in conversations with potential or prospective donators. They also post links to their personal web pages.

• Chat – Cyber begging can also be done in chat rooms. Like in online forums, persons engaged in this activity register for membership and engage in active conversation with one or more persons to solicit their help.

Many internet denizens do hand over small amounts to cyber beggars. Solicitors that engage in cyber begging get these small amounts through Paypal or through direct bank deposits. One notable example of this form of solicitation is Wikipedia. In order to run Wikipedia and present pure information without advertisements, its founder appeals to the general internet community to donate funds to keep Wikipedia running to supplement funds it gets from other sponsors.
